How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on FiresidePicks starts with one question: will this fireplace fit your wall and warm your room the way you expect?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the size and the spot

An insert has to fit an existing firebox, a wall mounted unit hangs on the wall and a recessed unit sits inside it. We check the exact width, height and depth each maker lists.

Recessed units also need the right stud depth. When a size detail matters, we say so and show you what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at heat settings, watts, flame colors and brightness, controls, noise and whether a unit plugs in or is hard-wired. We also note the certifications and warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like a fan that hums, a flame that looks flat or glass that arrives cracked.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A fireplace that's great for a large open room may score lower in a guide for a small bedroom wall.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fireplace we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. Follow its clearance and install steps, and use a licensed electrician for any hard-wired unit.
